Abstract:

The presentation gives a brief introduction into empirical research and discusses its importance for software engineering. Recently published studies are used to illustrate how empirical research helps analyse the effectiveness and efficiency of software engineering tools and techniques, and how empirical studies contribute to the design of new techniques and tools and the development of supporting theories.

Biography:

Dietmar Pfahl is an Associate Professor of the Software Engineering Group in the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Tartu, Estonia. In addition, he is an Adjunct Professor with the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary, Canada. His research interests include software project management, software process improvement, software product management, software testing, and empirical software engineering. Dietmar has more than 20 years of experience in conducting and leading national and international research and transfer projects with software industry, including organizations such as Bosch, DaimlerChrysler, Drager, Ericsson, Siemens, and Telenor. He is a senior member of ACM and a member of IEEE and the IEEE Computer Society.
