  Abstract:

In the time that someone takes to read this abstract, one another could solve a detective puzzle if they only had enough quantitative evidence base to proof their suspicions. This applies to detective’s life, but also to scientific investigations. And almost in every instance, measurement science enables deeper understanding of underlying phenomena or could provide valuable input to next ground-breaking discovery whether it is in life or science. And as it can be imagined, often measurements on laboratory data are not directly possible while the physical experiments are taking place, so the raw data needs to be first transformed to a form that allow measurement, and then need a medium allowing that measurement to happen. The aim of this presentation is to show how visual analysis, and simulations and are then closely linked together to enable new scientific discoveries. During my talk, I will present workflows of verifying numerical simulations using experimental fluid data, using various visualisation techniques, including Particle Image Thermometry, Particle Image Velocimetry. My current research (in UNSW EPICentre and Data61) combines the strengths of information visualisation, scientific visualisation, and computational modelling with analytical reasoning to aid decision making, understanding results of experiments and simulation, and also showing the content of various databases created as a result of (big) data processing algorithms in various fields including health & disease exposures, transport and infrastructure optimisation, emergency monitoring, forensics, cybersecurity, aviation, air quality monitoring, biomedical imaging and radiation therapy - combining models with observation data.

  Bio of the speaker:

Tomasz Bednarz is Director of Visualisation at the Expanded Perception & Interaction Centre (EPICentre) and A/Professor at the UNSW Art & Design. He is also Research Team Leader at CSIRO Data61 (leading Visual Analytics Team, in Software & Computational Systems program). His current roles reflect his conviction to a holistic approach to the wicked problems facing the collation, analytics and display of big data. His approach is expansive and encompasses the use of novel technologies (AR, VR, CAVE, Dome, AVIE), often in combination. Over the last couple of years, he has been involved in wide range of projects in area of immersive visualisation, human-computer interaction, computational imaging, visualisation, and simulations, computer graphics, games, computational fluid dynamics, demoscene. He is Chair of ACM SIGGRAPH Asia 2019. SIGGRAPH conferences are the world’s largest, most influential annual meetings and exhibitions in computer graphics and interactive techniques. The conference will be held for the very first time in Australia (Brisbane).
